All areas of solid waste handling are, by nature, odorous affairs. Municipal solid waste, landfills, composting and co-composting facilities all generate odors that can be offensive to workers and the community at large.
Different types of solid waste generate diverse odors. Typically, the gases given off from municipal solid waste landfills contain large amounts of methane, but since methane is odorless, it is the more odorous mercaptans that cause the nuisance malodors.
As with most odors, emissions are intensified by agitation. As solid waste is offloaded, the malodor dramatically increases. The Muni® product can be used to control these malodors, either in a localized area or to surround a large area such as a landfill. Dispersion systems can also be added to site hardware to control odors as they are released by machinery such as graders and tillers.
Houston, Texas: Muni® product is dispersed through nozzles mounted in the ceiling to control odors and reduce dust at this transfer station.
Due to the function of transfer stations, they tend to be located in areas where there are neighbors — and yet, nobody wants to smell trash. Muni® product applied via atomization nozzles located directly beneath the ceiling of these stations controls the odors associated with solid waste. As a side benefit, the high volume atomization systems suppress dust along with the odor.

Many landfills produce fertilizer through processing municipal sludge. When transport vehicles dump their loads, significant odors are released – a problem solved by applying Muni® products through oscillating fan systems.
Municipal sludge is often composted in indoor facilities or composting sheds. These areas create significant odor control challenges. Muni® products, either evaporated or atomized in concentrate form with nozzles or humidifying fans, control odors even in very large composting facilities.

Spray Gel® is a special gel formulation of Ecosorb® odor neutralizer that topically caps material blocking odors from escaping into the atmosphere – an ideal solution for open-bed waste trucks, working face of landfills, and other solid/semi-solid odorous materials. Dispersion systems can also be added to site hardware to control odors as they are released by machinery such as graders and tillers. Municipal products are also effective at controlling the nitrogenous compound odors commonly emitted from composting facilities.

Municipal wastewater treatment generates odors that can be strong, persistent, and a nuisance to employees, area residents and businesses located near to or downwind of the wastewater treatment plant.
Odors, including hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, are generated in varying degrees throughout the wastewater treatment process with the main odor-generating areas being pump stations, head works, clarifiers, digesters, aeration basins, lagoons, and sludge handling areas. Odors that are generally associated with this process include hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, sulfur dioxide, skatoles, mercaptans, amines, and indoles.
Each plant has its own particular problem areas, all of which can be remedied with the atomization of Muni® products at strategic points to control these odors.
Butler, Pennsylvania: An atomized “dome” of Muni® product is used to control odors rising form a primary equalization tank at a municipal wastewater facility.
Headworks and Primary Treatment
Hydrogen sulfide is a serious problem in wastewater treatment plants. Fogging systems installed at the bar screens and digesters solve the problem. In some cases Muni® products can be diluted with plant water for economical operation.
Wastewater Septage Dumping.
Septage haulers need to take their loads somewhere and that is usually the local wastewater plant. Raw septage is especially odorous and can present odor problems to plants that otherwise have their emissions under control. Simple fan or nozzle atomization systems positioned near the unloading point and vented or open downstream locations will provide simple and effective temporary odor control as needed.
Activated Sludge Basins.
Because basins for activated sludge can be both large and uncovered, migrating odors can be a serious problem. OMI can work with you to select the appropriate Muni® products delivery system and ratio to neutralize the odors.
